AVON

History

The Avon Rail Station offers a unique setting for several craft and historical shops

The first permanent settlement in Avon was established in 1814. Established by three families from Montgomery County, New York. Other families from New England followed in the years from 1815-1824 and from Bavaria Germany in 1833. Officially, Avon became a city in 1961. Early industries included saw mills, a grist mill, a steam saw mill, a steam flouting mill, a wagon manufacturer and farms and orchards. Many farms remain. Long known for its many greenhouses, the City of Avon has also become noted as a major center for antiques, housing several antique stores in century homes within the French Creek Historic District. It is becoming know for its growth, adding nearly 250 new homes per years to its 24 square miles of area.

Avon has long been renowned for its extensive number of antique shops, each with their own unique décor

Conveniently, located 22 miles west of downtown Cleveland, Avon is south of Avon Lake. Nevertheless, the two cities share many positive elements in schools, the community and heritages. Avon has become rated as an upcoming community, largely residential, as an alternative to upscale homes in larger, more expensive cities. Avon also offers a variety of homes, priced from the low 80's to $500,000 in the more upscale area. Avon is an original part of the Western Reserve and has grown considerably in the past nine years. Avon has the benefit of a larger city in Cleveland but in a neighborhood where people want to live. The city's growth is evident by the increase in the number of children attending the schools and rates as one of the best in the county.

Avon's newest addition built in 1998 is the high school with nearly 800 students and growing. The new Avon High School also features a community auditorium. The high school holds 600 seats and has two gym facilities. The high school is located at 37545 Detroit Rd. Outdoor athletics are not held in the auditorium but held in Avon's middle school. For sports, the Avon Eagles football team reached the Final Four teams in statewide competition. As far as academic results, Avon students have produced above average results and rank excellently in Ohio proficiency, scoring among the top school districts in the county. A few colleges nearby include Lorain County Community College, Cleveland State University and Baldwin Wallace.

AVON LAKE

History

Avon Lake Town Center

Kopf Construction, a major builder in our area, is developing the "Towne Center" as a cornerstone commercial development in Avon Lake.

Avon Lake, originally a part of Avon township, first came to the region in 1814. Farming and limited ship building were the chief industries at the time until 1880 because vineyards were planted and grapes were exported. Avon Lake is still known today for its award-winning two wineries. Avon Lake became officially recognized as a village in 1918, and the population still increases and is close to 19,000 and became a city in 1961. Other attractions include Avon Lake's fine golf courses as well as the many parks and shopping areas.

Avon Lake has many parks that offer wonderful Lake Erie vistas as well as a boat launch and fishing pier
A view from Veterans Memorial Park

Located 18 miles west of Cleveland and 10 miles east of downtown Lorain, Avon Lake has much to offer. On the Lake Erie shores, Avon Lake has a public boat ramp, fishing rentals, wineries, horse stables, and great parks! The nine city/community parks include a boat launch, municipal pool, private indoor/outdoor swimming facility, tennis courts, privately owned racquetball clubs, health spa, YMCA, and public fishing pier.

For the cultural side, the Old Firehouse (Avon Lake Civic Center)has adult mini theater and hosts many theatrical events. Not to mention the excellent school system that many residents take pride in as well as their community. There are currently 4 elementary schools, one high school, a Catholic Elementary School and Lorain County Joint Vocational School. Avon Lake also houses many of the newer housing developments and continues to grow each day.

Avon Lake High School

Avon Lake High School offers a unique location, only a short walk to Veteran's Memorial Park on lake Erie, the Community Recreational Park and the Extensive Public Library.

Avon Lake also provides an industrial area and provides a strong industrial base. Chief industries include: Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, BF Goodrich, Ford Ohio Truck Plant, The Geon Company, and industrial park at Pin Oak Parkway, located near Interstate I-90 and close to the turnpike. Because of the industries, Avon Lake still has one of the lower real estate tax rates. Business and industry are the source of the stockholders in the Avon lake Schools. 75 cents of each dollar paid by business and industry supports the local schools.

Real Estate Tips
Agency >Beneficial Brokers

Homebuyers who use the Internet to start their home search may be lured by the promises of realty companies advertising "one-stop shopping" guaranteed to meet all your housing needs. But before you sign up with an online company, consider the benefits of meeting personally with a real estate agent or broker who can represent your best interests in the transaction.

A full service real estate broker will be informed about the current trends in your local market. He or she will personally show you properties that satisfy your unique requirements. When you want to discuss your options for a home mortgage loan, your broker will refer you to a reputable mortgage professional who can help you choose a loan that meets your specific needs. Your broker will have a working relationship with home inspectors and homeowner's insurance companies whose professional integrity they can vouch for. Online "one-stop" companies profit from handling all aspects of a transaction, but the homebuyer may not receive adequate personal attention or get the best deal. It is to your advantage to engage the services of a real estate agent or broker, because their sole motive is to protect and guide you during the complex process of buying property.
